William Bieber Obituary

William R. Bieber, “Bill,” 89, of Preston Hollow, NY, formerly of Florham Park, NJ, passed away peacefully in Tucson, Ariz. on January 23, 2024.

Born in the Bronx in May 1934, Bill was a graduate of Samuel Gompers Industrial High School, graduating near the top of his class. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed primarily in Germany during the early 1950s. He remained with the Army until his honorable discharge from the Army reserve in March 1962. During his military service, Bill specialized in servicing electrical equipment, which served him well when he began working for the then Armor Elevator Company following the completion of active duty. A proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructers Local 1 during his time with Armor, Bill built a reputation as a skilled mechanic and chose to accept a promotion into management, eventually becoming a regional manager in their Connecticut branch during the early 1970s. After a short stint as vice president for a competing elevator company, Bill returned to New Jersey where he eventually became principal owner of his own elevator company, Clifton Elevator Service Company (CESCO), which he owned until his 2004 retirement.

During the mid-1960s, Bill bought his first piece of property in the Catskill region of New York, where he built a small hunting cabin. With his wife Connie and three beloved children in tow, this small house and property would become Bill’s great passion and he spent much of the next 30 years acquiring adjacent land and enlarging the small cabin into a full-sized, year-round home, where he loved to entertain family, friends and hosted many a legendary gathering to kick off the annual, fall hunting season. The “Catskills” quickly became the centerpiece of family social gatherings and through the years, other members of Bill’s family and friends would go on to own land adjacent to his, building their own mountain “retreats,” and enlarging his mountain social circle.  For the past 18 years, Bill spent the cold, winter months in the warmth and sunshine of Tucson, Ariz. with his companion Elaine, where he grew to appreciate the beautiful desert scenery and mild weather, free of the bitter cold and snowy weather of the northern Catskills.

Bill was an accomplished amateur athlete, starting with a promising high school baseball career and in later years, moving onto the local golf courses and bowling alleys. Bill continued to be a regular bowler and golfer up until the end of his life and could be routinely seen swinging a club on a mountain side golf course in NY or Arizona or fiercely competing at a local bowling alley. He was especially proud of the 730 scratch series he rolled in March 2012.

Bill is survived by a daughter, Lisa Rowe, her companion Ed Becker of Florham Park, NJ, a son William L. Bieber and his wife Jenny of Parsippany, NJ, and a daughter, Tracy Brown of Parsippany, NJ. He was the cherished grandfather of Jason, his husband Jerry, Christopher, Dina, her husband Jason, William Jr., his wife Marielle, Ryan, his wife Corey, and Mackenzie. He was the proud great-grandfather of Adelyn (Addie), Ford, Vienna and Cameron. He was the companion of Elaine Litvack and the dear brother of Anna Ryder, her husband Bob, and Susan Pace and her husband Tony.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and his wife Constance.

Bill was pre-deceased by his parents William T. and Anna Bieber, and his son-in-law’s David Rowe, Jr. and Glenn Brown.
