Richard H. Zeien Obituary

Richard Hufman Zeien, “Dick”, May 28, 1932 – December 8, 2024.

It is with great sadness we inform Dick’s family and friends of his passing on December 8, 2024.

Born May 28, 1932 to Helen and Nicolas Zeien, he grew up in Queens, New York.  His 4 years of service in the U.S. Air Force as a draftsman started him on an engineering career path.  After discharge from the service, he went on to earn a B.S. inengineering from Adelphi University. A blind date introduced him to Mary Jane Burhans and led to a wonderful marriage lasting 66 years.  Living in Florham Park, NJ for the past 60 years, Dick was a long-time member of Amazing GraceLutheran Church (formerly Good Shephard) serving on many church committees. He was also involved in town organizationsincluding the Red Cross, Florham Park Little League and Historical Society, AARP, and Seniors Club.  His long work career had him employed at Sylvania, ITT, RCA, Bell Labs, Lucent, and General Dynamics.

Dick will be remembered for his many projects.  He was always busy building something. Large projects included the addition of a porch, family room, and deck to his home, but there were also bookcases, shelving, and desks.  Dick shared his woodworking talents by creating beautiful handcrafted gifts for his family. He was Mr. Fix’it for anything that broke around his house and his children’s homes (including grandchildren’s toys, “Papa will fix it!”).

Dick had a passion for boating and all things nautical. He enjoyed sharing his passion with his family and friends with many sailboat and motorboat outings. Many happy adventures were had at the Jersey Shore with his children and grandchildren.

Dick was extremely proud and devoted to his family.  He was predeceased by his cherished wife Mary Jane in 2023 and is survived by daughter Kathy Rehm and husband Larry, son Rick Zeien and wife Marta, and five grandchildren: Christine Rehm-Patel and husband Shivam, Erin Rehm, and Jessica, Gregory, and Andrea Zeien.  He was also thrilled by the recent birth of his great-grandson Nolan Patel.
