Mary Jane Zeien Obituary

It is with great sadness we inform Mary Jane’s family, friends and neighbors of her passing on February 5, 2023.

Born December 1936 to Merrill and Alice Burhans, she grew up in Queen’s Village NY where she met lifelong friends.   A graduate of P.S. 035 and Woodhull High School, she went on to earn an associate degree from Green Mountain College.  Life changed forever after a blind date with the man to whom she would be married to for 66 years, Dick Zeien. Living for 58 years in Florham Park NJ, Mary Jane was a long time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and involved in many organizations; Red Cross, F.P. Garden Club, Sew N Sows, WELCA, F.P. AARP and Seniors Club. During these years she went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in education and was a teacher in Florham Park.  Continuous learning was always part of her life and through additional university classes, she took a position with the Washington Township School system in Long Valley NJ as a school social worker.

Mary Jane will be remembered for her love of the outdoors, cheerful disposition and compassion.  She provided love and support to her family, and in recent years could be seen at all her grand-children’s school and sporting events, even if it meant sitting outside in freezing weather.

Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Dick Zeien, daughter Kathy Rehm and husband Larry, son Rick Zeien and wife Marta, and five cherished grandchildren, Christine and Erin Rehm and Jessica, Greg and Andrea Zeien.
