Maria Puzzuoli Obituary

Maria Puzzuoli, age 86, a longtime resident of East Hanover, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2026. She was born in Arpino, a poor rural town in Italy, in 1939, the second of six children. Maria came into the world during difficult times — the lingering effects of the Great Depression and the approach of World War II.  A childhood shaped by hardship and uncertainty helped form a life marked by resilience, humility, and deep care for others.

As a young a girl, Maria and her family immigrated to France in search of greater opportunity. She was a diligent student and developed secretarial skills that launched her working career. She may have remained in France had she not met Alberico, a fellow Italian immigrant whose family had also settled there. Alberico, however, was already pursuing his American dream and had begun working in the United States.

Maria and Alberico were married in France in April of 1958. One year later, she joined him in Newark, New Jersey, where they began their life together in America.  Alberico worked in construction, while Maria devoted herself to their home and raising their three daughters. When her children were grown, she began a career in clerical work with Continental Insurance in Florham Park, where she remained until her retirement in 1997.

Together, Maria and Alberico embodied many of the hallmarks of the Silent Generation — frugality, perseverance, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering devotion to family.  Maria’s careful financial stewardship, paired with Alberico’s trade skills, enabled them to purchase their first property in Irvington, New Jersey, a six-family home.  Then a three-family home on Kerrigan Blvd. in Newark where they raised their girls.  Through years of dedication and sacrifice, they eventually settled into a one-family home in East Hanover in 1980.

Maria was the heart of her family — a true Italian mother and grandmother – nurturing, protective, and generous. Her love was expressed in the meals she made.  For decades, she welcomed family to Sunday dinners featuring pasta and roasted chicken.  Desserts were her pride and delight, especially her homemade cakes, cookies, and beloved cream puffs, which were a particular favorite of her grandchildren.  Even in the final weeks of her life, despite her frailty, Maria could still be found in the kitchen, rolling pizza dough, baking custard cups, and preparing her minestra soup.

Another source of deep happiness for Maria was her garden.  She had a true green thumb and had a magic touch of being able to turn a lifeless twig into the lushest garden.  She took special pride in her rose bushes, fig trees, heirloom tomatoes grown from seed, and raspberry bushes, from which she lovingly made homemade jam.

Devoted mother of Elisa (husband Pavo), Palma, (husband John) and Mary (husband Brian).  Cherished grandmother of Nina, Mara, Thanya, Kylie and Liam.  Dearest sister of Gino, Philomena, Tullio, and Anna, beloved aunt and friend.

Maria was pre-deceased by her husband Alberico, her parents Enrico and Assunta, and her sister Ida.

In lieu of flowers, a beautiful way to honor Maria would be to plant flowers or vegetables of your choice and enjoy the bounty of nature, as she did.  For those who are really ambitious, plant a fruit tree, preferably a fig tree.
