Maria Petrakakas Obituary

Maria Petrakakas, 93, passed away peacefully at Sunrise Assisted Living in Morris Plains, NJ on June 11, 2020. 

Maria was born Maria Coutoupidis in Cairo, Egypt and she came to the United States in 1962.   She lived briefly in Sherborn, MA, then Jackson Heights, NY before getting married to Edward Petrakakas in 1964 and relocating to New Jersey.  She resided in Brick Township for approximately 35 years before moving to Morris County.  She has been a resident of Sunrise of Morris Plains since January 2017.

Maria graduated from high school and thereafter attended a French school for two years Cairo.   She worked for TWA at Cairo Airport and KLM Airlines at JFK Airport as a clerk before becoming a housewife and mother.

She loved baking Greek goods, especially during the Greek holidays, and spending time with her family and friends.  She loved reminiscing about her childhood and young adulthood growing up in Cairo.  She loved traveling with her husband, especially to Greece, where she could visit with beloved cousins.

She was a member of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, Toms River, NJ.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Edward Petrakakas, her parents George and Anna Coutoupidis and her siblings Stavros Coutoupidis and Aspasia Faltas.  

She is survived by her loving daughter, Anne Maravic, and her husband Jacques, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are held privately.
