Mrs. Lydia Valvano of East Hanover went to be with the Lord on February 16, 2021. She was the daughter of Anthony and Rose Cappiello and was married to her beloved husband Frank Valvano Sr. for over 70 years. Frank went to be with the Lord in 2015. Lydia is survived by her two sons and their wives, Frank and Muriel Valvano of Rehoboth MA and Allan and Yolanda Valvano of Florham Park, NJ. She was the beloved Grandmother to Matthew, Jonathan, Lisa, Joshua, Jessica and Timothy Valvano, as well as a Great-grandmother to six great grandchildren.
Lydia was born in Orange, NJ, in 1925 and moved to East Hanover in 1960. Her husband Frank built the house they lived in and she worked alongside him supporting all the family members who came to help with food, drink and occasionally, first aid. She lived there as part of a close group of neighbors until she needed physical assistance when she aged and then moved to Brookdale Senior Living in Florham Park where she peacefully passed away.
Lydia was a caseworker with the Orange welfare board for many years and as part of the greatest generation she also worked for the military at the “Office of Dependency Benefits” in Newark, processing paperwork for the soldiers who came from the area.
She was an amateur artist who painted in many different mediums and won many prizes. Her specialty were portraits that were done with oil or pastel. She was a multi-talented woman who was also a Sunday School teacher for many years, very active in the Orange Gospel Hall which moved to Livingston in the 1980s.
Anyone who was blessed enough to have met Lydia, even over just one meal or for a conversation, will remember her wonderful disposition and Godly character. She was an inspiration to us all.
