Josephine Scelfo of Manahawkin, New Jersey, passed away on March 13, 2026 at the age of 95. Born to Lucy and Carlo Scelfo in Newark, New Jersey, Josephine worked as an administrative assistant for Newark Tile Supply until she retired.
Growing up in Newark, Josephine attended St. James Catholic School and Church and later graduated from East Side High School. As family was her focus, she surrounded herself with her siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins, sharing her love of cooking and playing cards. As a devoted daughter, Josephine cared for her mother through her battle with cancer at a young age and served as her father’s caretaker until his death.
Josephine retired to Manahawkin at the Jersey Shore, maintaining close friendships with other retirees from Newark and creating new ties within her Fawn Lakes Community; her days were filled with line dancing, lunch dates, especially Mahjong with Regina, Debbie, and her Manahawkin friends. She also enjoyed playing cards with her Colasurdo cousins and Bingo at her new home, the Terraces in Lakewood, NJ. She was an avid NY Giants fan for the past 70 years.
She was the cherished aunt of Lucyellen Dahlgren, her husband Joseph Curtsinger, Roseann Costello, her husband Bryan, Charles Dahlgren, his wife Mary Ann, Joseph Dahlgren, his wife Eileen, Michael Scelfo, Carla Wheeler, and her husband Robert. She celebrated many holidays and birthdays with her special cousins, Myra, David, Maureen, and Brien Walther. She is also survived by many loving grand nieces and nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Carlo and Lucy Scelfo, her siblings: Marie Bollwage, Rose Marie Dahlgren, Lawerence Scelfo, Joseph Scelfo, her nephew Lawrence Scelfo,Jr. and her dear friends, the Tamburri sisters.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday March 24th at 9:30am at Leonardis Memorial Home in Florham Park, N.J., followed by a funeral Mass at 11:30 at St. Thomas More Church in Morristown, NJ.
