Irene L Downey

Irene L. Downey (Swicinski), 87, of East Hanover, formerly of Maplewood, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2020.  

Irene was born in Newark, NJ to Ignatius and Ludwika Swicinski. Irene graduated St. Michael’s school of Nursing in 1954 and in July of that same year married her childhood sweetheart and the love of her life Donald E Downey of Irvington . Irene and Donald together raised  four wonderful children  . In addition to raising her 4 children and caring For  both her mother in-law Julia Downey and her own mother , Irene spent most of her life following her life’s love of caring for others as a Registered Nurse. Throughout the years, Irene had a passion for cooking, reading, learning, and spending time with her family. Most days she could be found in the kitchen creating large meals and special deserts. If you ever invited Irene to your home she was sure to bring one of her famous trays of chocolate covered strawberries or creamy cheesecakes . Irene never missed a birthday or milestone. You could expect to hear Irenes sweet soft spoken voicemail left on your phone, and flowers on your doorstep , many times with enough Happy Birthday balloons for everyone in the house. Irene  held a generosity of spirit that was admired by all. 
 
Irene was loved by her children and grandchildren, including her daughter Mary Ellen , son Donald and his wife Katie. Cherished grandmother of Matthew, Kelsey, Julia, and Connor. Irene will enter the heavenly gates to join her late husband Donald , sons Kenneth and Mark , and brother Teddy.
 
Funeral services were held privately.
