Genevieve Pladis (Malakas), 97, of Florham Park, passed away peacefully at her home on February 9, 2025.
Genevieve was born in Newark, NJ and then moved to East Orange before residing the last 53 years in Florham Park.
She grew up and attended school in the Ironbound section of Newark. She graduated from East Side High School in 1945 as valedictorian of her class. She then began her long career with the Newark Board of Education. While working she pursued her degree at Seton Hall University, and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. She retired from the Newark school system as an elementary school teacher in 1992.
Genevieve was active in many clubs including The Knights of Lithuania, council 29. She was a member of a Lithuanian song group which regularly sang on the radio. She was a founding member and long-time treasurer of The Lithuanian American Club of Northern New Jersey. She was also an active member of The Florham Park Senior Citizens.
Genevieve enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, and traveling. She especially enjoyed her trips to Lithuania where she visited with many relatives.
Devoted mother of Joanne Long, her husband Gene, and Jonathan Pladis. Cherished grandmother of Scott Long, his wife Laura, Brian Long, his wife Dayna, Christopher Long and his wife Kimberly. Proud great-grandmother of Briella, Camden, and Levi, William and Winter, Kelly and Caitlyn, Daryl and Miranda. Dear sister of Helen Sisak. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Joseph C. Pladis of 62 years and her brother Anthony Malakas.
Visitation at the Leonardis Memorial Home 210 Ridgedale Ave. Florham Park on Friday, February 14th from 4-7pm. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, February 15th, at Holy Family Church in Florham Park at 10am, followed by the entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
