Elliott C. Peterkin, 86, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, the Winter Solstice, surrounded by his loving family. He lived a full life defined by purpose, strength, service, and deep love for his family.
Born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, Elliott dedicated his life to hard work, integrity, and community service. He proudly pursued a career with the East Orange Fire Department, where his leadership and commitment ultimately led him to serve as Chief of the Department and later as an Arson Investigator—roles he held with distinction for many years. In addition to his public service, Elliott was a successful entrepreneur who owned and operated several local establishments, including pizzerias, restaurants, and bars. Known by all as one of the hardest workers, he was driven by determination, persistence, and an unwavering sense of responsibility.
Calm, steady, and quietly strong, Elliott was a guiding presence to those around him. He was an avid reader with a deep love for history in all its forms—especially political history—and was often found with a book close by. Tuesday night fights were a cherished tradition in his home, and football Sundays were never complete without him cheering on the New York Giants, proudly recalling his own quarterback days. He took immense pride in his family and their accomplishments, always offering guidance, encouragement, and perspective while reminding those he loved to stay grounded.
Elliott lived a meaningful and fulfilling life and remained engaged, proud, and present up until the day of his passing. He was loved, respected, and honored by many, and his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.
Elliott was the beloved husband of 43 years to RoseMarie Peterkin. He was a devoted father to Christine Cetrulo and her husband Paul, Brian A. Peterkin, Sean Gibbons and his wife Johanna, and Amy Hommen and her husband Billy. He was a cherished grandfather to Sophia and James Cetrulo, Theo and Tessa Peterkin, Zach and Alex Gibbons, and Julia Hommen. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Elliott was predeceased by his parents, William and Edith Peterkin, and his brother, William Peterkin.
