Elizabeth Sullivan Obituary

Elizabeth Sullivan (Curran), 82, passed away on December 29, 2023.  Liz was born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1941 to Elizabeth (Divertie) Curran and Anthony Curran.  Having seen a poster in the streets of Edinburgh about the adventures that await young women in America, her and a friend decided to take a chance.  In 1961 they traveled to Orange, New Jersey and began working as domestics, not nearly as adventurous as promised.  During this time, staying at the local YWCA, she began her lifelong friendship with Anne (Cockroft) Mazzocchi, a fellow victim of false advertising, albeit on the High Streets of Yorkshire.  Having decided that she wasn’t cut out for domestic work (something her children can attest to) she would spend mornings scanning the want ads at a coffee shop on the corners of Main and North Day Streets in Orange.  An employee at a company on North Day, ‘Herbie the plumber’ (his last name is lost to the ages) would notice this breakfast ritual on his way to work every day.  He approached her, asked if she was looking for a job and, once affirmed, paid her bill, walked her down the block and introduced her to her future Father-in-law, Neil Sullivan Sr.  The interview went very well and marked the beginning of her 25-plus year career as a bookkeeper, supervisor and controller.  Most of those years were not spent at Sullivan, by her choice, since she was a much more meticulous clerk than the company was used to.

In 1971 Liz emigrated to Australia with her husband Neil (never her boss) whom she had married in 1963.  Their children, ranging from four to eight years old, joined them on this journey, which was much closer to the adventure promised 10 years before.  While they enjoyed their time there, Liz was American by choice. So, after 18 months they returned to New Jersey, settling in Millburn. Liz joined the Millburn First Aid Squad, serving as member, CPR instructor, crew chief and ultimately chief of the squad.  She continued her accounting career, rising to controller at Shamrock Chemical, her final employer, until health issues forced an early retirement in 1986.  After working hard to recover from a stroke, she eventually turned that energy toward helping raise her nine grandchildren.  These grandchildren got to share in her love of travel by being treated to trips to Scotland or Denmark, where they could meet or catch up with her sisters and brother.  Liz was an avid Jeopardy fan (she tried out once), loved to read, visit Atlantic City (often with Anne) and spend time with family and friends.

Liz is  survived by her sons Neil (Carol), Sean (Dana), Patrick, and her daughters Elizabeth Graziani (Joseph) and Kathleen Hoppes (Chuck); her grandchildren Corinne, Neil and Kyle Sullivan, their mother Michele; Sean and Andie Sullivan, James and Mary Graziani, Michael and Colin Hoppes, her brother Bill (Ina), sister Pat Carrie (Robin), countless nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved dog, Shadow.

Along with her husband of 60 years, she was predeceased by her parents, brother Francis, sisters Margeret Quinn and Ann Garnham.
