Dorothy Balogh Obituary

Dorothy C. Balogh (Skwiat), 82, of South River, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2023.

Dorothy was born in South River and lived her entire life there. After graduating high school, she pursued a secretarial career, working for a time at the Boy Scouts of America in New Brunswick. But soon after she got married to Stephen in 1958, son Jimmy came along, and then son Danny, and she became a full-time homemaker. She was also a devout Catholic at St. Mary’s of Ostrabrama for many years.

During her entire life she enjoyed cooking. With her mom, she prepared sumptuous Polish meals of kielbasy, pierogi and kruschiki for large family gatherings at her home almost every Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was also an amazing baker, and her nut cups were a family favorite.

Although she never learned to drive, she enjoyed taking long car rides to distant shopping centers with her husband Stephen, their two sons, and her two parents, all squeezed into the family’s maroon Chevrolet Monte Carlo. They would stop at White Castle for dinner on the way home.

In her later years, after her husband passed away, she spent all of her time chatting with her friends at South River Landing, doing crossword puzzles, watching the news, and discussing everything from makeup to politics during long phone conversations with her niece Susan. She also loved hearing tales of the mischievous cats that Dan and Laura had adopted, and proudly displayed photos of them near her television.

Dorothy had a life-long interest in lighthouses and often dreamed of living in one. Her apartment was decorated with lighthouse models of many sizes. Even her paper towel holder was a lighthouse. In her last years, she couldn’t survive without her thinly-sliced Swiss cheese, Tabatchnick split pea soup, and apple snail Danishes.

Dorothy had a wonderful sense of humor, and her laugh always brought a smile to everyone’s face. She was spunky and could be stubborn, but she made sure she lived her life the way she wanted to live it, right until the end. She will be dearly missed.

Devoted mother of Dan A. Balogh and is wife Laura.  Loving aunt of Susan Kolomyetz, her husband Alex, and their daughter Carlie.

Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents Francis and Anna Skwiat, her husband Stephen J. Balogh, her son James J. Balogh, and her brother Arthur Skwiat.

The inurnment and committal prayer service will be held on Thursday, February 9th,10am, at Holy Rood Cemetery in Morristown.
