Carmine P. DeMaio, 81, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Carmine was a dedicated member of the City of Newark Police Department for 31 years.
Over the span of his career he worked 21 car in the City’s 2nd precinct after graduating the police academy in 1967. From the 2nd precinct he joined the Traffic Division as a Motorcycle Officer which was one of the proudest positions he held.
From the motorcycles he was promoted up to the Detective Bureau where he served in the Youth Aid Division, Sexual assault unit and ultimately the Homicide squad which was one of his details that he held closest to his heart.
It was bittersweet when he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and left the Homicide Squad for Internal Affairs, but was excited to return to Homicide as a Sergeant not long after.
Carmine lived and loved the Newark Police Department to the end. It was not just something he did for a living but it became a part of who he was in his legacy.
He had a special brotherly love for some of his partners over the years. These great men he had close to him right to the end. Mike Marelli, Anthony Ambrose, Richie Paraboshi, Joe Martino, Foster Badgely, Buddy Purcell, Randy Thompson and Chuck Conte.
Carmine left a legacy in the NPD of a man who was a mentor to so many young talented men and women including his son Sammy who followed in his footsteps and rose to lead the department as the Police Director. One of Carmine’s proudest moments to share with his son. Rest in Eternal Peace Carmine DeMaio.
