Obituary

Arthur Peter, Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend

Arthur Peter, a devoted family man, a community pillar, and a passionate golfer, peacefully passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at his home in Florham Park, surrounded by his beloved daughters.

Born in Jamaica Queens, NY, Arthur moved to Valley Stream Long Island to begin raising his family. His career later moved them to Florham Park in 1975, where he established his roots, became an integral part of the community and where he and his wife Mary raised their daughters. He was a proud member of Holy Family Parish and an active participant in the Knights of Columbus. His deep affection for his country was evidenced by his affinity for the American Flag, and he proudly served as an Army Veteran.

Arthur's remarkable career spanned an impressive seven decades. He embarked on his professional journey at AT&T, dedicating 40 years of his life to the company. After his retirement, he explored various roles, including insurance broker, limousine driver, and golf course ranger. Arthur's love for golf was a defining aspect of his life, and he found joy in every swing and putt. He often shared his passion for the sport with family and friends, turning rounds of golf into cherished memories.

His legacy continued through his dedication to The Newmark School/Newmark High, where he contributed 15 years of service. The Arthur D. Peter Award for Excellence, named in his honor, reflected the impact he had on countless lives.

Above all, Arthur was a family man who radiated boundless love and kindness. He cherished his role as Number One Fan to his children and grandchildren, attending every milestone and event. His encouraging words were a source of wisdom and strength, often accompanied by his signature highlighter and red pen. Arthur's kindness was as unwavering as his smile, and his selflessness served as an inspiration to all who knew him. Arthur was truly the best “Girl Dad”.

Arthur is survived by his devoted children: Eileen (Pat), Nancy (Glenn), and Regina (Pam). He was a cherished grandfather to Mary Shannon, Joe, Colleen, John, Matthew, Ellen, and Andrew. His love extended to his grand dogs, Franco, B & B. He also leaves behind his sister Beatrice Dini of Queens Village, NY, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is pre-deceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary (O’Dea) Peter, his parents, Denis and Helen Peter, his nephews John Naum and Joseph Dini, and his siblings: Christopher, Mitchell, Anna Naum, Thomas, Florence, Voilet Rupp, and Lenora.

A visitation will be held at the Leonardis Memorial Home, Inc., 210 Ridgedale Avenue, Florham Park, on Sunday from 1-4pm. A funeral mass in honor of Arthur's life will take place on Monday at 10:00am at Holy Family Church in Florham Park, followed by his interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nextmark Foundation, which supports both Newmark School and Newmark High School, at 1000 Cellar Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076. Arthur's legacy of service, dedication, and love for golf will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
