Anthony “Tony” Butler, 62, of East Hanover, formerly of Cedar Grove, passed away at his home on May 9, 2023.
Tony had a one-of-a-kind spirit and will be missed by all who were lucky to meet him. Tony took pride in his 17 year career at the the Essex County Sheriff’s Department where he retired as a Lieutenant; he was admired by everyone who worked with him. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Tony was aware of his intentional nature. Whether he knew you for 20 minutes or 20 years, he welcomed you into his world just the same. He lit up any room with his laughter, quick wit, and excellent conversational skills.
Tony was a highly intelligent man to his core. He held an encyclopedia of information stored in the back of his mind about any and all topics. He was lovingly referred to as the man who knew “a little bit about a lot” — and he wasn’t shy to share that knowledge with others and listen to their perspectives as well.
He found the most serenity when he sat outdoors with a book in his hand and his best friend for 8 years, his dog Bonez, by his side. His family finds peace in knowing that their souls are together again.
Some of his fondest memories were made in Wildwood with his family every summer. He could sit outside on a balcony reading and listening to the Beatles and Elvis until sunrise.
Tony will be remembered for his pride in his family, fascinating storytelling, and ability to connect with the people around him. He will be immensely missed.
