Alexander R. Fidalgo, Sr., 65, of East Hanover, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Alex was always in motion. He could not sit still, always working on something, planning the next thing, or finding a reason to celebrate with the people he loved.
His wife, Nancy, was his best friend, and together they shared a life full of adventure. They traveled often, especially to Europe and Boca Raton, spent summers in Seaside Park, and found their greatest joy with family and friends. Just two weeks before his passing, they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary surrounded by their entire family.
Work was a source of great pride. Alongside his father, Raymond, he bought and restored homes in East Orange, taking pride in helping improve the neighborhood. He spent years as a mechanic before owning the River Road Exxon in East Hanover. At 27, he started a small condominium maintenance business of his own and, through hard work and determination, grew it into a successful company.
He enjoyed tennis, Formula 1 racing, health and fitness, real estate, dining out, dancing with friends, and rewatching Columbo every night. Always interested in learning something new, he recently begun taking Italian lessons. Never much of a runner, at 50 years old he set his mind to the New York City Marathon and completed it twice.
Alexander faced glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, with his family and friends by his side. He leaves behind his wife, Nancy; his mother, Anne Marie Fidalgo; his sisters, Donna and Diane and his brother, Ray. He is also survived by his son, Alex, and daughter in law, Tara, and their children, Dominic (11), Francesca (8), and Sal (6); and his daughter, Gina, and son in law, Harry, and their children, Dean (4) and Sophia (2).
His grandchildren were his greatest joy. To them, he was Poppy, the Muffin Man, always arriving with muffins and making every visit special.
Alexander never took a day for granted. He saw the world, made friends wherever he went, and left his family with a lifetime of memories.
