Bernard (Bernie) Wetter, Jr. age 91, a lifelong resident of Florham Park, NJ peacefully passed away on Friday, September 20, 2019 after a long struggle with dementia and cancer. Bernie married his sweetheart, Shirley Baxter, in 1948. This past August they celebrated 71 years of marriage. They had a wonderful and always adventurous life together filled with lots of love and many laughs. Life granted them good health for most of their lives where they were able to enjoy travel all over the world.
Bernie began work at Pulverizing Machinery at a young age starting on the loading dock and eventually working his way through the various departments gaining respect and knowledge. He ended his career after 31 years as Vice President of Operations. Retirement was not in Bernie’s vocabulary so his second career was working for the Newark Archdiocese for many years selling crypts until his final retirement.
One of Bernie’s favorite hobbies was boating from his early days at Lake Hopatcong, where he operated a part-time water ski school with his high school friend, to many summers on Long Beach Island. He continued his love of boating and fishing throughout his life enjoying his 32 ft Luhrs boat which he loved to tinker with and lovingly referred to as the “leaking teakie”.
Bernie was a man of many talents including building the family home just a couple of lots down from the home where he grew up. There was nothing he couldn’t build from an above ground swimming pool made with left over sheet metal to treehouses, and go-carts converted with skis for winter use.
Bernie will be remembered especially for his quick wit, generosity and kindness.
Bernie is survived by his wife Shirley , 3 daughters (Pam, Debby and Cindy), grandson Dustin, 4 great grandchildren (Emma, Dustin Jr., Ariana and Leo).
Funeral service will be held privately.
