ELIZABETH (BETTY) GALIGER OPDYKE

Elizabeth (Betty) Galiger Opdyke, aged 80, resident of Florham Park, NJ for fifty years, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Friday, October 27, 2017 after a long struggle with multiple health issues. 

Betty was born on July 5, 1937 in New York City, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Galiger of Hungarian decent.  On August 16,1959, Betty married Charles E. Opdyke Jr.

Loving grandmother to Amanda and Hillary (Charles), Mark, Bradley and Brian (Mark) and Tyler (Susan)

Betty had a warmth that touched people. She always thought of others and was first to offer support or assistance to a friend.  Being surrounded by her family is what brought her the most joy.  Betty enjoyed working at Ridgedale Middle School in Florham Park for 32 years. She welcomed thousands of students over the years, making each feel special.  She was the “go to” resource for many and had a talent for remembering the most random details about those she met.  Betty was passionate about animals, nature, gardening and cooking. Her retirement was spent enjoying the companionship of her friends, especially those from the Livingston Wellness Center and her rescue dog, Boo Boo.

Betty is survived by her brothers, Michael (CT), John (NJ) and Joseph (FL) Galiger and their wives. She also leaves behind sister in law, June (Opdyke) O’Hearn and numerous friends.

A memorial visitation will be held with family and friends, on Saturday, November 4th from 11AM – 1PM including a service from 12:30 PM  to 1 PM at the Leonardis Memorial Home, 210 Ridgedale Ave, Florham Park, NJ 07932. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s name to the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, 194 NJ-10, East Hanover, NJ 07936.
